2019 Round 2 v Collingwood
Following our round 1 win against the Blues, we now face the team put us out of the 2018 finals series without 2 of our ‘first picked’ players in Rance and Houli. What could go wrong? 🙂
I don’t foresee any other changes to the round 2 team so will look at some of our options. We started the game with 7 defenders – the 6 who started on-field and Broad on the bench. For mine, he comes into the starting lineup to allow Vlastuin to play the Rance role. Big shoes to fill for sure, but this will have the least amount of impact to the back line mainstays in Astbury, Grimes, Vlastuin, and Short. Broad is also a member of that club. Vlastuin would now also become the “general” of the backline. Balta can also line up on the defensive side of the wing (which I think he would have done anyway) to fill a hole in front of Cox and to run the other way and become dangerous at the other end.
Replacing Houli comes down to who is available and playing well. By all reports, Ellis had a 40 touch game in the VFL practice match at the weekend, so he comes into the side to help with our run off half-back. The last spot in the 22 goes to another debutante in Jack Ross. His play in the JLT matches and his ferocity on the ball as highlighted in the VFL practice match last week earns him a spot ahead of Markov in my opinion.
Weller and Butler did just enough to be given another opportunity at this level. Castagna still needs another match under his belt before being considered for promotion. I see Garthwaite as more of a replacement for Astbury than of Rance. In any case, he is coming back from an achilles injury so will need more time to get right.
So, my team for Round 2 is:
B: Astbury – Broad– Grimes
HB: Short – Vlastuin – Ellis
C: McIntosh – Cotchin – Balta
HF: Rioli – Edwards – Riewoldt
F: Prestia – Lynch – Higgins
FOLL: Nankervis – Lambert – Martin
INT: Ross – Graham – Weller – Butler
IN: Ross, Ellis
OUT: Rance (inj), Houli (inj)
