    He's an absolute disgrace.

I know I've been accused of being overly emotional in regards to this but how that bloke can face himself in the mirror each day is unbelievable.

What is the general opinion of the latest news re Hird?

It is sad that it has come to this, if it had been our team I would've found it hard to remain a supporter.
The "whatever it takes" motto surely will go down in AFL history as the most misguided direction ever taken by a team, at least the one known about currently.

Very sad news about Hird. Hope he can get better and his kids will have their father around fully functioning in their lives for many years to come.

He was one of the few opposition players I would watch play and marvel at his ability to get the ball and use it to full advantage.

as a result of that football ability he lived a charmed life where everything he did turned to gold....well up until 2012. From there the pressure from multiple sources has obviously (based on this latest development) adversely affected his mental health.

To me it serves no purpose now to continue to feed off this story.

I feel sorry for the guy.

It'll be interesting to see if the parasite scumbags who masquerade as journalists give him some privacy.

Sadly , I doubt they will and it's something that's bothered me about their disgraceful treatment of our own Dusty Martin.

It must be horrible to pick up the paper or turn on the TV to see your name and character getting dragged through the mud with total bullshit from pathetic journos. Especially for a young bloke like Dusty.

I'm pretty sure there's nobody who wants the whole world to believe slanderous stories written about them that simply aren't true.

    Good luck to James Hird.
I hope he gets the help he obviously needs and bounces back , if for no other reason than for the sake of his kids.

Agree, Hird has bigger responsibilities than anything football gives/asks of him.

A selfish act, one which he will need to work hard at bringing trust back with those that love him.

Hopefully Tania can get him to the people that will help James put his life back together and in perspective.

Having been involved in employee health and safety I've seen how easy it is for the injured and others to blame the most obvious target for their welfare demise, however it is never that simple and while the "big issue" has played a part there is usually something else behind the scenes that eventually tips them over the edge. The supplement saga has been around a long time and I would have thought Hirdy would have been through the worst days of it. Generally that "other" thing, the tipping point, is something out of the public eye, not related to work. We may never know what the full story is but I wouldn't be jumping on the supplement saga as the sole reason he has ended up where he is. This doesn't detract though from the fact he needs specialist help to overcome whatever demons he is fighting, and I wish him a speedy recovery, even if he did destroy us on the field way too many times to remember.

AN OUTSPOKEN advocate of James Hird says the former Essendon coach was devastated after being publicly savaged at a Christmas drinks function a few weeks ago.

According to The Herald Sun, Hird was berated by an Essendon supporter and the wife of a prominent judge in front of stunned guests at a private party last month.

Former cricketer and outspoken Hird advocate Bruce Francis tweeted that one woman “gave James both barrels over what she thought happened at Essendon”.

“She made startling accusations, all baseless. She had no idea what she was talking about. Her comments had a devastating effect on James.”

There have reportedly been several other incidents involving members of the public approaching Hird and his young family.

Hird’s former lawyer Steven Amendola said on Friday, that the football world had forgiven former AFL stars who glassed their partners or slept with their best mate’s wife, but seemingly not Hird.

Hird was reportedly feeling pressure to clear his name ahead of his hospitalisation on Wednesday from a suspected drug overdose.

Melbourne media have been camped outside the mansion the couple shares with their four children in the affluent suburb of Toorak, since news broke of Hird’s hospitalisation on Thursday afternoon.

That shouldn't be an "OR" because both instances refer to the same player. Should be an "AND".

    Also, I hate hearing Carey.

As for Hird, I hope he sorts himself out and gets down to the business of being a good father which may require putting the past behind him and realising that your job or reputation do not define who you are. I wouldn't let him anywhere near the game again. Plenty of players manage to go off into the world beyond the bubble of earning a living from the AFL and related media.

James Hird always seemed so calm, poised, and self-possessed.
He received a terrible pasting in the media from Caro and others but rarely if ever retaliated.
The latest incident at the presumed Christmas party must have served as a catalyst to tip the scales.
You can never be certain with depression as it is an insidious illness because some sufferers feel ashamed to divulge their condition.

the gravity of it all hits home

In my dealings with AFL staff , they talk , in very strong and unambiguous terms , that they , THE AFL , own the game referred to as aussie rules
from the failed Hawks / Demons merger , to the us taking on Ben Cousins and now the Essendon drugs saga

the public own the game , the AFL might largely run it and try and control its direction

we the public will never know the full truth of this case

we do know , but can probably never really appreciate how big a price Hird is paying for his part

but for those who are coming out in support of Hird now I put the question

when first confronted by the media and being asked if his players were taking injections

he strongly denied it , but in possession of knowledge that something was happening at Bomberland the media kept coming in for the kill
Hirds chosen approach whipped the media into a frenzy

    Imagine if Hird had replied
"yes we have employed a highly regarded sports science expert and are trying to maximum the health and performance of our athletes, as all other 17 AFL clubs are"
"we are drawing on the advances made in Olympic and other elite sports worldwide and adapting them to our players while working within the guidelines setout by WADA & ASADA"
and when pressed for more by the media scrum reply
    "that's commercial inconfidence"

how would the whole saga have played out then ? Very very differently I'd say
it was of his own making
By his constant denial at every opportunity, he set in train a very sad chapter in AFL history
