Hi folks

Just a heads up the annual player count down starts tomorrow. Will be the usual player bio run down and then open to discuss the player. One player a day until Thursday 19 March and ends on Hardwick.

If you want to see anything specific on each player let me know.

Yes snuck up on me as well. Thinking the other day it might be coming up in the next couple of weeks and then did the sums and it is tomorrow.

Been too busy watching replays of the Prelim and Grand final

Chiefs are looking to break a 50year hiatus, they have started well.
AFLW has the first Richmond cards in the upcoming set, it was a glaring omission up until now!

OK 44 days to go and first up is #50 Marlion Pickett
DOB 6 January 1992 so just turned 28.
He is 184cm and 84kg

Played just one AFL and what a story. Taken in the 2019 mid season draft only after Grigg retired mid season and even though he was not playing due to an injured finger that required surgery. What would his chances be from that kind of start to an AFL career.

Played his first game in the seconds in Round 18 then went on to play in the VFL grand final and by the end of that day he had a premiership medal around his next plus the Norm Goss medal for BOG.

Due to the injury to Jack Graham Marlion was selected to debut in the 2019 AFL Grand Final. Only the 6th player in history to be selected for his first game in a grand final and the first to do so in 67 years. He collected 22 possessions and kicked a goal and he will for ever be remembered for the blind turn he executed in the middle of the ground.

Marlion should be a permanent fixture in the top side through 2020. If he can average his first game stats for a full year he will be a genuine star.

43 Days to go and next up is Bigoa Nyuon

"Biggie" is 195cm and 87kg and not sure of his date of birth but would be turning 19 sometime this year.

The Richmond bio on Biggie is as follows:

Bigoa played with the Dandenong Stingrays this year and played one game for Vic Country at National level. He played a mix of key position forward, back and in the ruck. He showed potential in all areas of the ground. We liked the fact Bigoa improved throughout the year and was starting to show his rare athleticism more as the year wore on.

His Round 18 game against the Murray Bushrangers where he had 14 disposals, seven marks and two goals as a ruck/forward was very impressive. Bigoa’s athleticism for a 195cm player shone through at the Victorian Draft Combine where he tested quickest for speed with a 2.85 second 20m run. His vertical leap and agility were also in the elite bracket.

Bigoa has the potential to develop into a strong and athletic key position player. We think he will grow in our program and make the most of his considerable talent.

Anyhoo with 42 days to go next up is #46 Ben Miller

Ben is 20 years of age 195cm and 95kg. Recruited from Railways Kalgoorlie via Subiaco WAFL. Taken at #63 in the 2017 National Draft.

Has been played in Defence in the VFL with some work as a forward. A hip operation delayed his start to 2019. Coming into his third year with this preseason looking like his first full preseason he will be given longer than normal to find his feet but he needs to start showing something as we need to find some long term replacement talls. At 20 I would be keeping him for at least 2020 and 2021

Was Miller the lad that used to drive hours and hours into Perth to play WAFL?

Today is 41 days to go and we now have #45 Hugo Ralphsmith

Hugo 186cm and 70kg. These are his pre draft stats as the Richmond player bio for Hugo is empty. So needs to build his frame a bit so expecting he will be in VFL side for 2020.

He was taken at pick 46 in the 2019 National draft and comes to Richmond from Sandringham Dragons via Vic Metro

Predraft info has his strengths as x-factor, Vertical Leap, Speed, Work Rate and clean hands. Improvements needed are contested game and consistency

Positions are forward and outside mid.

Other comments
- highlights package similar to Jaidyn Stephenson
- Good over head marking with impressive leap and swooping on the crumbs with his speed and clean hands
- not afraid to fly for high marks and with his timing he can out mark taller players
- can play wing where he likes to run and carry and he is very hard to stop once he gets on his bike
- Strong performer at Combine testing for speed and leap but it was his 2km time tthat really impressed

Yes that was him. It meant he really only played with the WA side and Subiaco. Therefore his training with Richmond is his only consistent exposure to elite training. First pre-season starts after the draft and then 2019 has the surgery delaying his season.

To date in the VFL he really hasn't shown much but give the background I am prepared to give him more time. However would want to start seeing some good things in the VFL this year to continue to support him.

Saturday was 40 days to go. #44 Sydney Stack is the next to discuss.

Sydney is 19 years of age 179cm and 72kg

Was taken in the AFL's, then, new Pre-Season Supplementary Selection Period (don't think the AFL has continued this one). Comes from Federals WA via Perth WAFL

Hit the AFL with a blast and just as quickly hit Melbourne's Viney with a hip and shoulder. Played back then forward and with more fitness he is destined for a bigger midfield role.

Sunday saw the countdown click to 39 and next up is #43 Derek Eggmolesse-Smith

Derek is 21 years of age 180cm and 80kg and has played 2 AFL games

Was taken in the 2018 Rookie Draft Next Generation Academy Selection. 2018 was a write off for him with a stress fracture and didn't play until August. 2019 saw him get 2 games in the top side in rounds 16 and 17. Has shown enough to have some future. The question being who would he dislodge from the top side?

And today with 38 days to go we are up to #42 Ryan Garthwaite

Ryan is 21 (wow thought he would be older seems to have been around for a while) 192cm 91kg

Was taken at #72 in the 2016 National Draft. From Lavington Panthers NSW via Murray U18

Has now played 9 AFL games with a good block of games last year from round 8 to round 13.

Again Ryan has shown enough to keep him on the books but as a defender he will be working overtime to dislodge someone from the top side.

37 days to go and we are up to #41 Mabior Chol

Mabior is 23 200cm 91kg. Played 10 AFL games and kicked 9 goals

Was taken as a rookie in the 2016 Rookie draft then delisted at the end of 2018 but re-rookied in the 2019 Rookie Draft. From Yeronga QLD via Aspley NEAFL

Going to be interesting how 2020 pans out for Mabior. He is fast reaching the point of no return and needs a jump in performance to cement a spot in the side. Soldo must have the No1 ruck now with Nank in 2nd and CCJ closing at a rate of knots.

He has the skills just needs to get the mind to the level required.

Wednesday was 36 days to go and we were up to # 40 Callum Coleman-Jones

Callum has a DOB of 13 June 1999 so he is turning 21 mid season. He is 200cm 102kg. Has played 1 AFL game

Came to us at selection #20 in the 2017 National Draft. He is from Unley SA via Scotch College SA Via Sturt SNAFL

Richmond is taking its time with Callum and his development has all training/VFL watches in a positive mood about his future. At just 20 it will still be 2/3 seasons before he is properly matured as a ruck/forward. Probably about the time Riewoldt retires he will be fully ready for the 25 game season.

One to get excited about

Thursday was 35 days to go and next is #39 Jake Aarts

Jake's DOB is 8 December 1994 so will be 25 for all of 2020 season. He is 177cm 75kg

Was taken at #16 in the 2019 Rookie draft. He comes to us from Beaconsfield Vic via Bendigo VFL via Richmond VFL

Mature age recruit having spent three years with Richmond VFL. Small forward with high level fitness. Fits in nicely with the game plan but has plenty of rivals for the same role. Yet to debut in the top side.

Friday was 34 days to go and Noah Cumberland is next #38

Noah's DOB 15/3/2001 so just about to turn 19. He is 183cm 79kg (Richmond bio on Noah is empty so these are stats I cannot confirm but are consistent across a couple of different sites)

Brisbane Academy player. Richmond made a bid on Noah at pick #43 (the first of our three picks in order at that point of the draft). Brisbane chose not to match. There has been some positive early training reports on Noah. Still I would think Richmond will take their time and put a years development into him as there are several other, more developed, options for selection before him.

33 days to go on Saturday. Another of the new boys is up in #36 Will Martyn

Again the Richmond bio on Martyn is empty so going off what I can find elsewhere

Born 29 March 2001 (just days after Cumberland) he is 184cm and 79kg (Twins with Cumberland?)

Richmond's National Recruitment Manager Matthew Clark says he is one of the more professional kids you will come across. Taken the pick after Noah Cumberland at pick #44 and again Brisbane chose not to match Richmond's bid on their Academy player

Again Richmond will take their time. Martyn reads as more inside than Cumberland.
