AFL fans are now able to relive former moments of glory, triumph, and heartache, with the AFL today announcing the Toyota AFL Fixture Throwback, a line-up of classic matches from years gone by featuring the teams that were initially set to do battle in round two and beyond.

In the absence of live-action, AFL Media has selected matches which will be sure to get fans blood pumping during the postponed 2020 Toyota AFL Premiership Season, – and the catch – they won’t know which game they’ll see until they tune in.

Streamed via AFL.com.au and the AFL Live Official App, the historic encounters will begin tonight with the replay of a famous match between arch-rivals Collingwood and Richmond at 7.25 pm AEDT.

Will it be the 2018 preliminary final, when the Pies stunned the red-hot flag favourites courtesy of a Mason Cox masterclass on their way to a shock 39-point win?

Or a throwback to 2016, when Brodie Grundy somehow snapped a goal? out of a pack to seal a thrilling one-point win at the MCG? Or perhaps when captain Trent Cotchin helped the Tigers to recover from a slow start to narrowly clinch a five-point win for his side?

Friday night’s matchup will see Essendon and Sydney take centre stage at 7.50 pm AEDT, with games kicking off on Saturday from 12 pm AEDT, and Sunday from 2 pm AEDT.

Traditional match highlights and analysis of the games will continue to be celebrated throughout the virtual season, showcasing the athleticism and skills from past superstars.

AFL General Manager of Growth, Digital, and Audiences, Darren Birch said the launch of the Toyota AFL Fixture Throwback is just one way the AFL industry and its partners continue to innovate during this unprecedented time, with a sole focus on uniting fans and keeping the football spirit alive.

“The Toyota AFL Fixture Throwback will provide those who are enduring the postponement of football with a way to celebrate the greatest moments throughout our 160-year history.

“While fans won’t be able to attend matches and congregate together in the traditional sense, we’re encouraging all football fans to stay connected via the AFL’s #FootyAtHome Facebook group, come together with the wider community united by their passion for the game."

Telstra AFL Live Pass subscribers can tune in on the AFL Live Official App and AFL.com.au tonight from 7.25 pm AEDT to watch the first match in full as it happened. No screen size restrictions apply to these matches.

If you’re a Telstra mobile customer with a current Telstra post-paid mobile, pre-paid mobile or mobile broadband plan, a Live Pass is included as part of your post-paid plan or when you maintain a $30+ active pre-paid recharge.

You can activate your Live Pass until 31 December 2020 using your compatible Telstra mobile or tablet on the Telstra mobile network, by downloading the AFL Live Official app from the app stores (data charges apply) and following the prompts.

Fox Footy will also play a live recall of blockbuster games, commencing tonight. The 2020 fixture of games will continue over the weekend in ‘FOX FOOTY’S Round 2 Shutdown Shootout’, with the very best match-ups in special edition replays, celebrating what fans have to look forward to when footy returns.

Seven will be doing full replays of great games from the past, tailored for each of VIC, SA and WA markets hosted by Matthew Richardson on Friday at 730pm on 7Mate and 7Plus.
